Is there anything more wonderful in life than snuggling down with your child and enjoying some wonderful books together? My boys both love books and reading has been something that we've encouraged right from the very start with both of them. Along with their bedtime stories, we try to encourage them to spend time with their books throughout the day and some of my favourite memories are of us all enjoying a book together; I love to make up voices for the different characters and the boys love to pretend they are acting out the adventures afterwards! Reading to your child has many wonderful benefits and paves the way for a lifelong love of reading. We were kindly given the opportunity to review some wonderful books courtesy of the Book People and they have also donated a fabulous bundle of baby books for you to win too!
Why is it beneficial to read to your baby/ toddler?
Reading helps to develop your child's imagination.
Books can open your child's mind to whole new world of possibilities from the real to the fantastical. Books can take you on new and amazing adventures from the comfort of your own home!
Reading to your child helps to develop language skills.
Your child's mind is like a sponge, absorbing the words and phrases he/she hears. Reading regularly to your child ensures your child is exposed to a whole new vocabulary. You'll be amazed at what they pick up!
Reading to your child can help brain development.
Hearing new words and phrases helps to develop neural pathways, impacting on and improving their cognitive ability!
Reading helps your child to learn about the world around them.
Your child will learn so much about the world around them from seeing it in a book. Early learning books can help your child learn all about colours, animals, counting, letters, families and a whole host of other topics. Each time you read to your child you are helping them to piece together the world around them.
Reading encourages bonding time.
Your child loves nothing better than spending time with you. Reading to them is a great excuse for a cuddle and to spend some quiet, quality time, just the two of you!
It's comforting.
Your child will be comforted by the sound of your voice, the close contact to you as well as the soothing sound of the words he/she hears. You may find they become quite entranced by repetitive or rhyming books. Reading books that they already know can help soothe and calm them as they know what to expect and will be comforted by the familiar sounds.
There's something glorious about completely immersing oneself in a book and that's why I will always encourage my boys to read. What a world of adventure and surprise awaits them!
